Porn addiction having serious, damaging effect on relationships, says sex therapist.

Emese Taylor, 02 June 2017

Every year more than 4.5 million hours are spent watching porn on a single online platform – Pornhub. Porn is now instantly accessible across the world, and the amount that can be found online is increasing at a rapid rate. This is fuelling the growing problem of porn addiction, according to renowned sex therapist Emese Taylor. She argues that far from being a minor problem, sex addiction is having a damaging effect on relationships and means that some of those affected are unable to find or sustain romance, and it’s an issue she’s witnessed a sharp rise in.

It might be a taboo subject but past research indicates it’s a problem affecting thousands in the UK, most commonly men. Identified as a preoccupation that causes significant problems to a user’s life, porn addiction can impact on multiple aspects, from work to relationships. Taylor argues that the common response is to ignore the issue and sweep it under the carpet but this approach means that porn addiction will continue to spiral out of control. Instead, she is urging those affected to take action and seek help from a professional.

Taylor, Psychologist and Founder of London Love School, said, “Porn addiction affects both parties in a romantic relationship. I’ve seen cases where it’s torn couples apart despite their best efforts to overcome the problem. It’s an issue that I’ve seen more and more people seeking help with over the years. As the addiction takes hold, porn addicts often find that they neglect their relationship responsibilities, pass up opportunities, and are left feeling anxious, stressed, or irritable. All of this puts considerable pressure on relationships. For those that aren’t in relationships it can make building a romantic connection impossible.”

Taylor is the expert behind London Love School, an organisation dedicated to improving relationships and sex. Among the varied courses offered at the school is one that covers the issue of porn addiction. Taking an interactive and one-on-one approach allows Taylor to identify and then resolve the underlying reasons for the compulsion. Over 12 weeks, porn addicts will be challenged about how they think about sex in order to create healthier environment to build relationships.
